Moving On a Tight Budget

Moving On a Tight Budget

Your manager calls you and says that you’re going to be sent to the company’s new location outside of Etobicoke, Toronto, or the GTA altogether. The problem is that you’re not getting paid for another two weeks but you just may have enough funds to cover the costs of moving out of Toronto. If you want to save money, take the time to do your research- you can hire affordable long distance moving services that also provide top notch service.

When you contact the different long distance movers, ask them how long they’ve been in business, and see if they offer to come to your current residence to provide you with an accurate moving estimate.  That’s the first sign of a moving company that wants your business and is probably professional and reputable.  Obtain a few quotes, and then analyze each moving quotation to see how they summed up the total.  That way, you can properly assess where you can cut costs in order to shave down the total cost of moving your items.

Ask Anyone and Everyone for Packing Supplies

Now that you contacted and made arrangements with affordable long distance moving services, it’s time to start packing. To save money on packing supplies, ask friends, family, and neighbors if they have any old newspapers, cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, markers, old bedspreads, bed sheets, masking tape, or duct tape that they have no use for, so that you can use it. This not only will save you dollars, but also will keep you from making multiple trips to the office or moving supplies store.  Be sure to check out the back of schools and supermarkets to see if there are any cardboard boxes which they have disposed for recycling.

 Only Pack What You Need

Because most long distance moving services charge by the dimensional volume of items you have, you can save money on moving expenses by only packing what you need. If there are items you do not want to bring with you to the new house, get three storage bins and label them “Donate”, “Sell” and “Recycle.”

Don’t Hire Packing Services, Get Your Friends to Pitch In

If you have a lot of items that need to be packed, do not waste money on packing services but instead you can ask peers to come and help you pack items for the move.  You in return can offer them food and beverages while you pack up.

 Move During Slow Season

Unless you’re starting your job in the new location during the summer, don’t move in the summer cause it’ll cost you top dollars with Toronto movers.  It’s more expensive to move in the spring and summer months because these seasons are the peak times, especially for long distance moving services (keep in mind that the cost of fuel (i.e. gas) goes up during the summer months as well).  And so if you want to save on moving expenses, pack for the move between the fall and early spring months.  Furthermore, don’t hesitate to ask the moving company if they are willing to offer any discounts on their services- it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Packing for a move takes dedication and help from others but when you finally have everything packed, the move is less stressful to deal with. Look for ways to get discounts on moving supplies and coordinate to use long distance moving services in Toronto at least a month before the move.
