Tips on Packing and Unpacking for University & College

Tips on Packing and Unpacking for University & College

You just received a university or college acceptance letter and now it is time to start packing and preparing for the big move into your dorm. Considering that you’re a student, a smart thing to do is to look for a moving services company in Toronto that offers affordable packing and unpacking services that will help you ease into your new post-secondary life in an organized manner.  Find a packing and unpacking service within Toronto that has been around for at least a few years, and more importantly, a business that has a strong reputation in the community.  But if packing and unpacking services is outside your budget and not an option for you, here are some tips for the “do-it-yourself” students.

 Never Pack Your Entire Wardrobe

Let’s be realistic- you may be tempted to pack all of your seasonal clothes and entire wardrobe into several suitcases, but the reality of the situation is that you’re not going to have any space to store them if you’re living in the typical dormitory- having a roommate who will also require space for their clothing and storage.  Secondly, you’ll most definitely be purchasing new clothing throughout your college years.  A good idea is to initially lay the clothes that you would like to take with you to college on the floor, then take only half.

What You’ll Definitely Need For College

Dorms, just like any room in a home, collect germs and dirt every day and so it is important that you pack cleaning supplies (after all, you may end up with a bit of a slob who may not prioritize cleanliness as much as you do). Make sure you pack a mop, broom, antibacterial wipes, dishwashing liquid, cleanser, a bucket and air freshener. Any other miscellaneous supplies can be purchased another time after you’ve moved into your residence.  When you arrive at the dorm and your roommate has not arrived yet, it’s probably a good idea to do a thorough cleaning of the dorm before you unpack your items cause chances are, your room was cleaned by janitors quite some time ago shortly after the previous students who occupied your room had finished their semester prior to the summer break.

Find Out Residence Hall’s Requirements Before The Move

Whether you are packing on your own or using packing and unpacking services from a moving services company in Toronto, you’ll need to find out what the moving requirements are from the university or college to understand which items are allowed and not allowed within the dorm. You can visit the residence hall’s website to obtain this information and if they have a virtual tour of a room available online, you should definitely view it to get a better idea of how small or large the room will be prior to your packing.

Always remember that when you pack successfully when moving out of Toronto for university or college, you inadvertently will be more organized for the new journey which subsequently will lessen stress. You know, listening to your parents may not be a bad idea if they too attended college away from home.  And in the case that you have an older sibling who attended college abroad, asking them for advice and suggestions would probably be the smart route as well. Whatever you do, never wait til the last minute!  Always prepare well ahead of time when moving anywhere, regardless of the end destination.
