Long Distance Moving Tips

If you are moving out of Toronto and it’s a long distance move, research at least five different local moving companies and obtain estimates from them. You also want to verify that each moving company is licensed, insured and bonded, and that they have the proper workable equipment for transporting very heavy items such as your appliances and furniture. Once you have hired the moving company and establish the moving date, clean your entire home and delegate a few of the tasks to family and friends. When packing your fragile belongings, always pack them in newspaper or bubble wrap, and always place them in the moving boxes last to avoid damage.

Prepare Checklist

Your long distance moving from Toronto will be stress-free if you prepare a detailed checklist at least a month before the move. Write down the date you need to have your utilities transferred and write down the date the movers will arrive so that you will have everything packed and labeled prior to that date.

Contact Employer, Friends and Family

One thing many people don’t consider when planning a long distance move is to advise your employer of your move, explain your circumstances, and inform your last day of work (if applicable) out of common courtesy.  Moreover, if there are any hiccups with your move and you require a day or two off work, your employer will already be aware of your situation.  And if you are leaving your employer permanently as a result of your relocation, at least you will leave on cordial terms and could still use your employer as a future reference if required.  Another thing to remember is to remind your family and friends the day of your move.  That way, if there was an emergency, they would know your whereabouts.

Call Previous and Future School

If you have children, you will need to contact your child’s current school and let the principal know of the move so they can be prepared for the day when you take your child out of the school, and prepare any administrative paperwork required to transfer student records to the new school.  Secondly, you will want to contact your child’s new school to confirm all required documents and paperwork was received so that there are no discrepancies when your child is ready to start school in the new city you are moving to.  You want to eliminate as much unnecessary tasks as possible, since there will be a lot of “running around” to do when you finally settle in your new home.

Categorize Moving Storage Bins By Room

When you pack your items, categorize your storage bins by room. Simply label your kitchen equipment ‘kitchen stuff” while labeling your bedroom accessories as “master bedroom.”  By doing this, you will be able to pack and load the most important boxes in the moving truck last, as they will be unloaded first.  This will help you to be organized and therefore make your moving transition seamless and efficient.

Have Fun in the Process

Moving doesn’t always have to be so serious.  Have your friends hang out at your home during the week of the move and ask them to help you pack and label moving boxes.  And in return, order food and drinks to make it a fun event.  Moreover, give some of your unwanted items away to your friends as they may have more use for it than yourself- reduce clutter.

A long distance move is stressful but you can cut back on the stress by planning the move at least three months before it is time to leave your current home. Do not be afraid to get help from friends and relatives, and choose the right long distance moving company in Toronto that is affordable and suits your needs. Transfer all utility services and visit the post office to have your mail sent to the new address. Finally, relax.
